Background of the Study
Disasters, both natural and man-made, often require immediate and well-coordinated responses to mitigate their impact on affected populations. Nurses, as vital members of healthcare teams, are crucial to the success of disaster response efforts, particularly in public hospitals (Odeyemi et al., 2024). Effective preparedness and response depend on the training, resources, and protocols in place for managing emergencies. In Gombe State, which is vulnerable to a range of disasters, including disease outbreaks and natural catastrophes, there is a need for a systematic evaluation of the preparedness of healthcare providers, especially nurses, for disaster and emergency situations. This study aims to examine the level of disaster preparedness among nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital, the factors influencing their readiness, and their role in emergency response.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of disaster preparedness in healthcare settings, many public hospitals in Nigeria, including Gombe State Specialist Hospital, face challenges in effectively training and equipping nurses for disaster response (Chukwu et al., 2023). Inadequate preparedness may lead to inefficient response times, increased morbidity and mortality, and overwhelmed healthcare facilities during emergencies (Odeyemi et al., 2024). Nurses' preparedness for disaster situations, including their ability to manage triage, provide basic care, and follow protocols, is crucial for the success of emergency response efforts. The study aims to identify the gaps in disaster preparedness among nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital and propose strategies to improve their readiness for future disasters.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working at Gombe State Specialist Hospital involved in emergency response and disaster preparedness. A limitation is that the study will only examine preparedness from the nurses' perspective and may not capture the broader hospital-wide preparedness strategies. Additionally, the study may not generalize to hospitals in other regions due to differences in resources and training.
