Background of the Study
Disasters, both natural and man-made, often require immediate and well-coordinated responses to mitigate their impact on affected populations. Nurses, as vital members of healthcare teams, are crucial to the success of disaster response efforts, particularly in public hospitals (Odeyemi et al., 2024). Effective preparedness and response depend on the training, resources, and protocols in place for managing emergencies. In Gombe State, which is vulnerable to a range of disasters, including disease outbreaks and natural catastrophes, there is a need for a systematic evaluation of the preparedness of healthcare providers, especially nurses, for disaster and emergency situations. This study aims to examine the level of disaster preparedness among nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital, the factors influencing their readiness, and their role in emergency response.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of disaster preparedness in healthcare settings, many public hospitals in Nigeria, including Gombe State Specialist Hospital, face challenges in effectively training and equipping nurses for disaster response (Chukwu et al., 2023). Inadequate preparedness may lead to inefficient response times, increased morbidity and mortality, and overwhelmed healthcare facilities during emergencies (Odeyemi et al., 2024). Nurses' preparedness for disaster situations, including their ability to manage triage, provide basic care, and follow protocols, is crucial for the success of emergency response efforts. The study aims to identify the gaps in disaster preparedness among nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital and propose strategies to improve their readiness for future disasters.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of disaster preparedness among nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital.
  2. To evaluate the role of nurses in emergency response at Gombe State Specialist Hospital.
  3. To identify the factors influencing nurses' preparedness for disaster response at Gombe State Specialist Hospital.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of disaster preparedness among nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital?
  2. What is the role of nurses in disaster and emergency response at Gombe State Specialist Hospital?
  3. What factors influence nurses' preparedness for disaster response at Gombe State Specialist Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital have insufficient preparedness for disaster and emergency response.
  2. Nurses' preparedness for disaster response positively influences the efficiency and success of emergency management efforts at Gombe State Specialist Hospital.
  3. Organizational and resource-related factors significantly affect nurses' preparedness for disaster and emergency response at Gombe State Specialist Hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working at Gombe State Specialist Hospital involved in emergency response and disaster preparedness. A limitation is that the study will only examine preparedness from the nurses' perspective and may not capture the broader hospital-wide preparedness strategies. Additionally, the study may not generalize to hospitals in other regions due to differences in resources and training.

Definitions of Terms

  • Disaster Preparedness: The state of readiness of individuals and organizations to respond effectively to emergencies or disasters, including training, protocols, and resources.
  • Emergency Response: The immediate actions taken to provide care and alleviate suffering during or following a disaster or emergency.
  • Triage: The process of sorting patients based on the severity of their condition to prioritize treatment in emergency situations.
